
Programme
1st. Stage
This programme must contain:
a.) a Haydn Sonata
Plus b.)
one set of the "Lieder ohne Worte" by Mendelssohn selected from the following
books: Opus 19, Opus 30, Opus 38, Opus 53, Opus 62, Opus 67, Opus 85 or Opus
102 (Please note that the six Lieder must be taken from one and the same opus
number.)
OR Trois Fantaisies ou Caprices Op. 16
OR Three Preludes (Book 1) AND /OR Three Etudes (Book 2) Op. 104
2nd Round:
A programme of 60 minutes duration, consisting of
a.) A Sonata of Beethoven or Schubert
Plus b.)
One or several pieces of Schumann and/or Chopin and/or Liszt.
(This means that a candidate is free to choose any one of the three composers listed in b) or any two or all three of them as long as the duration of this stage does not exceed the required 60 minutes in all.)
Transcriptions are allowed.
The repeats are left to the discretion of the performer as long as they stay within the time limit of this round.
All pieces of rounds 1 and 2 must be played by heart.
3 rd Round
consists of a) piano chamber music OR Vocal Chamber Music PLUS b) one composition chosen from works written by the composers currently living in the Ruhr area and sent to the candidates who have been accepted to compete in the Second International Carl Bechstein Piano Competition – no later than by November 15th 2009.
Candidates who have chosen to compete in the piano chamber music category should choose one piano quartet selected from:
Piano quartet op. 47 of Schumann
or piano quartet op. 2 of Mendelssohn
or piano quartet op. 3 of Mendelssohn
or piano quartet KV 493 of Mozart.
The International Carl Bechstein Piano Competition has been able to win the strings of the renowned Fauré Piano Quartett for the piano chamber music category.

Candidates who have chosen to compete in the vocal chamber music category should select one song cycle from Robert Schumann out of the following cycles:
Liederkreis (Heine) op. 24
(edition for medium voices)
Kernerlieder op. 35
(edition for medium voices)
Liederkreis (Eichendorff) op. 39
(original edition)
Frauenliebe und -Leben op. 42
(original edition)
Dichterliebe op. 48
(edition for medium voices)
3 rd Round continued
We recommend to use Edition Peters. The selection of singers provided by the Carl Bechstein Piano Competition will be kindly made by the internationally renowned lieder-accompanist Hartmut Höll, president of the "Hochschule für Musik Karlsruhe".
This category demands not only a performance. In the precedent rehearsals which will be attended by the jury, a musical dialogue is expected in which the musicians will come to a mutual understanding about the composition and its interpretation. The selection of movements for the rehearsal will be decided by the jury.

4. Stage, Finale
The candidate shall submit two selected piano concertos.
a.) A concerto by Haydn
b.) A concerto by Mendelssohn, Schumann, Chopin or Liszt.
The concerti must be played by heart.
